Abstract

The USGS Salton Sea project encompasses a 5-kilometer buffer around the Salton Sea, California. Dewberry classified LiDAR for a project boundary that touches 623 tiles (1500 m x 1500 m). Dewberry also created tiled DEMs with a hydro-flattened lake surface.

The original horizontal spatial reference system for the USGS Salton Sea project was NAD83, UTM Zone 11N, meters. Two sets of LAS were delivered that have different vertical reference systems. These are: 1. Ellipsoidal, meters and 2. NAVD88, meters. OCM used the ellipsoidal files and reprojected to horizontal geographic projections to meet the OCM schema for the Digital Coast Data Access Viewer.

Distribution Information

  • Simple download of data files.

Access Constraints:

None

Use Constraints:

Users should be aware that temporal changes may have occurred since this data set was collected and some parts of this data may no longer represent actual surface conditions. Users should not use this data for critical applications without a full awareness of its limitations. These data depict the heights at the time of the survey and are only accurate for that time.

OCM used the ellipsoidal files and reprojected to horizontal geographic projections to meet the OCM schema for the Digital Coast Data Access Viewer.

Purpose:

The purpose of this LiDAR data was to produce high accuracy 3D elevation products, including tiled LiDAR in LAS 1.2 format, 3D breaklines and 1 m cell size hydro flattened Digital Elevation Models (DEMs).

Data Quality

Horizontal Positional Accuracy:

Dewberry does not perform horizontal accuracy on the LiDAR. Compiled to meet 1.96 meter horizontal accuracy at the 95 percent confidence level by Towill.

Vertical Positional Accuracy:

Vertical Lidar data accuracy was tested against 21 independently surveyed check points. The result of the test is an RMSEz = 0.035 meters (0.068 meters at 95 percent confidence level).

Completeness Report:

A visual qualitative assessment was performed to ensure data completeness and full tiles. No void or missing data exists.

Conceptual Consistency:

Data covers the tile scheme provided for the project area.

Process Steps

Process Step 1

CC ID: 1136128
Description:

Dewberry was tasked with collecting, classifying, and producing derived LiDAR products by USGS for the Salton Sea project

Process Date/Time: 2011-02-01 00:00:00

Process Step 2

CC ID: 1136129
Description:

The NOAA Office for Coastal Management (OCM) received the topographic lidar files in LAS format from SWFWMD. The files contained lidar easting, northing, elevation, intensity, return number, etc. The data was received in Ellipsoid UTM Zone 11N (meters) and NAVD88 (meters). OCM performed the following processing for data storage and Digital Coast provisioning purposes:

1. The LAS files were reviewed and erroneous elevations were removed.

2. The LAS files were converted to ellipsoidal (geoid09) and geographic coordinates.
