Abstract

This is a bare earth data set. The data contained in these files contain hydrographic and topographic data collected by the

CHARTS system along the Lake Erie coast of NY in Chautauqua and Erie Counties, from July 26 - August 4, 2007. The data were

collected and processed in geographic coordinates and ellipsoid heights. The positions were relative to NAD83 in decimal degrees

of longitude and latitude. The heights were converted from ellipsoid to orthometric heights (NAVD88) using the Geoid03 model

with the results in meters.

CHARTS integrates topographic and bathymetric lidar sensors, a digital camera and a hyperspectral scanner on a single remote

sensing platform for use in coastal mapping and charting activities. Data coverage generally extends along the coastline from

the waterline inland 500 meters (topography) and offshore 1,000 meters or to laser extinction (bathymetry).

The topographic lidar sensor has a pulse repetition rate of 9 kHz at 1064 nm (near-infrared wavelength). The bathymetric lidar

sensor has a pulse repetition rate of 1 kHz at 532 nm (green wavelength). Native lidar data is not generally in a format accessible

to most Geographical Information Systems (GIS). Specialized in-house and commercial software packages are used to process the

native lidar data into 3-dimensional positions that can be imported into GIS software for visualization and further analysis.

Process Steps

Process Step 1

CC ID: 1138590
Description:

These data were collected using the CHARTS surveys system. It is owned by the Naval Oceanographic Office and operated

through contract. The system collects topographic lidar data at 20 kHz and hydrographic data at 3 kHz. The system also

collects RGB imagery at 1Hz. A CASI-1500 hyperspectral line scanner is integrated with the system as well. Aircraft position,

velocity and acceleration information are collected through a combination of Novatel and POS A/V equipment. Raw data are

collected and transferred to the office for downloading and processing in SHOALS GCS software. GPS data are processed using

POSPac software and the results are combined with the lidar data to produce 3-D positions for each lidar shot. These data are

edited using Fledermaus software where anomalous data are removed from the dataset. The data are converted from ellipsoid to

orthometric heights, based on the GEOID03 model, within the chartsLAS program.

Process Date/Time: 2008-01-01 00:00:00

Process Step 2

CC ID: 1138591
Description:

The NOAA Office for Coastal Management (OCM) received topographic and hydrographic files in ASCII format. The files contained LiDAR

elevation and intensity measurements. The points were classed as 'never classified.' LASEdit was used to bare earth classify

the data. The data were provided in geographic coordinates and ellipsoidal heights and in orthometric heights. OCM performed

the following processing to the ellipsoidal height data to make it available within the Digital Coast:

1. LASEdit was used to convert the ASCII formatted files to las format.

2. The hydrographic point's classification was changed from 'never classified' to class 11, 'bathymetry'.

3. The topographic points were bare earth classified using LASEdit.

4. The LAS data were sorted by latitude and the headers were updated.
