Abstract

This dataset includes lighthouses in coastal areas of the United States (including Puerto Rico) that may or may not be official or active aids for navigation. This dataset is a compilation of lighthouses identified from various official data sources: Aids to Navigation (ATON), National Geodetic Survey (NGS), National Park Service (NPS), and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). Lighthouse focal plane height measurements are given in feet (FT). Only lighthouses extracted from the ATON database contain verified focal plane heights, whereas lighthouses from other official sources have unverified focal plane heights.

Purpose:

To support ocean planning activities pursuant to the Executive Order Regarding the Ocean Policy to Advance the Economic, Security, and Environmental Interests of the United States, the Energy Policy Act, the National Environmental Policy Act, the Rivers and Harbors Act, and the Coastal Zone Management Act.

Supplemental Information:

Processing of lighthouse point data (in order of priority): ATON database (USCG)- eliminated all point records with 'Buoy' or 'buoy' in the Structure description and those without a match in the lighthouse database supplied by a private citizen; NGS database- eliminated all point records already identified in the ATON database, records not containing 'lighthouse' in the Name description or in the Marker description, records where the Last Condition field was specified as "Not Found," and those without a match in the lighthouse database supplied by a private citizen; NPS database- eliminated all point records already identified in either the ATON or NGS database and those without a match in the lighthouse database supplied by a private citizen NOAA; (Raster Nautical Charts)- Digitized points for lighthouses not already found in the ATON, NGS, NPS databases, or by a private citizen. Private Citizen- Lighthouse list (with Lat/Lon coordinates).
