Summary

Abstract

This dataset consists of on-the-ground footprints for images were collected during the 2019 Test Flights flown out of Kotzebue, AK. Images were collected using a six-camera array: one thermal and one color camera pointing directly below the plane and two thermal and two color cameras pointing at an angle of 25 degrees off center below the plane. Inertial navigation system (INS) data were recorded each time images were taken. A post-processing script used details from the camera and the plane's latitude, longitude, altitude, heading, pitch, and roll to generate footprints of the area captured by the frame. The footprints for the IR and RGB images are of slightly different sizes because the cameras did not capture the exact same area in the frame. The footprints shapefile was reduced to only include seals found on images in the Test Flight Imagery provided.

Footprints can be linked to images based on the image name or the flight, camera_view, and dt fields.

Purpose:

To develop machine learning algorithms for detecting ice seals and classifying ice seal species using IR and RGB imagery.
