To support ocean planning activities pursuant to the Executive Order Regarding the Ocean Policy to Advance the Economic, Security, and Environmental Interests of the United States, the Energy Policy Act, the National Environmental Policy Act, the Rivers and Harbors Act, and the Coastal Zone Management Act. |

| Description: |
1) Summary tables from the 2020 American Community Survey 5-year estimate were downloaded as comma-delimited (*.csv) documents, any superfluous attributes were eliminated, and tables were joined to the appropriate county geometry using the countyFIPS code field common to both the summary tables and TIGER/Line geometry. 2) Summary tables for American Samoa, Guam, the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, and the U.S. Virgin Islands were collected from the 2020 Decennial Census (Total population and total housing units) 3) Fields were left as null values if specific county-level data was not available via the U.S. Census (median household income). Null values were only included for American Samoa, Guam, the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, and the U.S. Virgin Islands, as American Community Survey (ACS), are not conducted in the Island Areas, 2020 Decennial Census data with this data has not yet been summarized, and this is unavailable from the 2010 Decennial Census at the county level. 4) County geometry data was downloaded from the U.S. Census 2020 TIGER/Line Shapefile, Counties (and equivalent) and 2020 TIGER/Line Shapefile, County Subdivisions - American Samoa data were used, as it is current with the 2020 American Community Survey 5-year estimate. Coastal counties, defined as US counties and equivalent territorial units which have at least one coastal border, were selected. Country subdivisions were included for American Samoa, as the details are not appropriately captured in the Counties (and equivalent) dataset. 5) Validation of geometry and visual inspection for completeness. |
