Abstract:

This data layer is a point coverage of known sediment samplings within the United States Economic Exclusion Zone (EEZ). The data comprising this layer were sourced from two U.S. Geological Survey databases (usSEABED and the East Coast Sediment Texture Database) as well as the NOAA Electronic Navigation Charts. There are many scientifically accepted sediment classification schemes in use today, and the wide variety represented in the data sources used in this product dictated the generalized attributes utilized herein. Additional details regarding the standardization of the data can be found in the data processing and attribute definitions sections of this document. In many cases, additional details such as Munsell coloration, grain size, and composition are available in the raw data from the source. Interested parties are encouraged to seek further information from the source of the data listed in the attribute table and further described in the sources section of this document.

Purpose:

To support ocean planning activities pursuant to the Executive Order Regarding the Ocean Policy to Advance the Economic, Security, and Environmental Interests of the United States, the Energy Policy Act, the National Environmental Policy Act, the Rivers and Harbors Act, and the Coastal Zone Management Act.
