Abstract

Mean wave power density estimates represent naturally available US wave energy, derived from measurements observed during a 51-month study period. Measurements were taken from 42,000 grid points out to a distance of 50 nautical miles from shore. Values represent the average instantaneous power generated by a meter length of wave crest per grid point. In accordance with accepted global practice, wave power density is measured in kilowatts per meter of wave crest aggregated across a unit diameter circle. Data were classified using quantiles. Bathymetric effects are known to have a large effect on wave characteristics at depths shallower than ~20m on the east coast and ~50m on the west coast. Reliable site-specific information in shallow waters can only be produced using results from models with higher spatial resolution that include shallow-water physics. Results may not be accurate in the shallower waters of the inner continental shelf.

Process Steps

Process Step 1

CC ID: 1176932
Description:

Acquire: http://en.openei.org/datasets/files/868/pub/wave_power_density.zip

PROJECT data into NAD83

Remove value of ann_wef when equal to -9999

DISSOLVE the feature class, basing the dissolve on the mean annual ("ann_def") field

Add overallMeanWavePowerDensity field and populate with data found in ann_wef field

DELETE all other superfluous fields

Select values in power ranges as displayed in NREL viewer (http://maps.nrel.gov/mhk_atlas), and recalculate values in overallMeanWavePowerDensity respectively

Perform an additional dissolve, basing the dissolve on the overallMeanWavePowerDensity field

EXPLODE all features to make multi-part polygons single-part

Execute the REPAIR GEOMETRY function

Acquire http://en.openei.org/datasets/files/868/pub/wave_depth.zip

PROJECT data into CRS - NAD83 GRS 80

Remove values of ocean depth of 1001, 1000, and 200 and of 50 on the east coast (Keep 50 on west coast)

Add overallMeanWavePowerDensity field and populate with data found in depth field

DELETE all superfluous fields

Select by location features from wave power density that are within features from wave depth, and delete selected features

Copy and paste all features from wave depth to wave power density

EXPLODE all features to make multi-part polygons single-part

Execute the REPAIR GEOMETRY function
