Abstract

Lidar (Light detection and ranging) discrete-return point cloud data are available in the American Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing (ASPRS) LAS format. The LAS format is a standardized binary format for storing 3-dimensional point cloud data and point attributes along with header information and variable length records specific to the data. Please refer to http://www.asprs.org/Committee-General/LASer-LAS-File-Format-Exchange-Activities.html for additional information. This data set is a LAZ (compressed LAS) format file containing lidar point cloud data.

This lidar data was originally collected by Oneida County. The data was transferred to USGS and converted to Entwine Point Tile format (https://entwine.io/). This metadata was created to reference the NOAA Data Access Viewer leveraging of the USGS hosted Entwine Point Tiles for the data. The Data Access Viewer will allow processing of the data, but the underlying data is under the control of USGS. Links to the Entwine Point Tile JSON files are in the URLs section.

Purpose:

High-resolution digital elevation maps generated by airborne and stationary LiDAR have led to significant advances in geomorphology, the branch of geoscience concerned with the origin and evolution of Earth's surface topography. LiDAR provides unique characteristics relative to other remotely sensed data sources by providing three-dimensional feature information that cannot be derived from traditional imaging sensors.

Vertical accuracy was assessed in five land cover classes. Vertical root mean square errors were as follows:

Tall Grass = 0.12 meters with n = 27

Low Tree = 0.11 meters with n = 24

Tall Tree = 0.07 meters with n = 38

Urban = 0.05 meters with n = 13
