165° W, -120° E, 45° N, 0° S

Exact locations are not known, it is impossible to match up each fish from the auction to corresponding fish caught aboard a specific vessel but a very generalized location can be found using the date and vessel name to searching information provided by the PIRO longline observer program and fishermen via the Longline Logbook data. Most species are within the vicinity of the Hawaiian Archipelago; it is noted if the fish has been imported.

Item Identification

Title: United Fishing Agency Fish Auction Sampling Data
Status: In Work
Abstract:

Contains information collected such as: lengths, weights, sex, quantity, species, etc. from various bottomfish and pelagic species during frequent visits to the United Fishing Agency Fish Auction in Honolulu, Hawaii.

Purpose:

To collect lengths and weights for size composition analysis and compare lengths of MHI vs. NWHI species that would otherwise be unattainable.

Notes:

The UFA fish auction provides an easily accessible, efficient means of collecting valuable life history data.

Supplemental Information:

Dataset was created for the information collected from bottomfish species but during seasonal and TAC closures the sampling focus shifted to pelagic species. Opah is strongly represented in this dataset due to the discovery of a cryptic species and the additional sampling associated with this discover. Its frequent occurrence within this dataset is not an indicator of abundance, but rather a result of species-specific sampling.

Location Description:

The Life History Program has relocated to the Honolulu IRC facility on Ford Island hence; most data sets are stored there.

Data Set Information

Data Set Scope Code: Data Set
Data Set Type: Files
Maintenance Frequency: As Needed
Data Presentation Form: Table (digital)
Entity Attribute Overview:

Paper data forms containing lengths and weights of fish sampled located at the IRC. All data originally recorded on paper has been entered into an Excel Spreadsheet. In November 2010, a barcode scanning device was utilized at the auction, during the time the barcode scanner was in use, hand-written data forms were not recorded. Data is updated often and some of the data is accessible using an Oracle database.

Entity Attribute Detail Citation:

Referred to as UFA_Main in Oracle Database
