Marine turtle stranding data - Sea Turtle Stranding and Salvage Network (STSSN)

The Sea Turtle Stranding and Salvage Network (STSSN) was formally established in 1980 to collect information on and document strandings of marine turtles along the U.S. Gulf of Mexico and Atlantic coasts. The network encompasses the coastal areas of the eighteen state region from Maine through Texas, and includes portions of the U.S. Caribbean. Data are compiled through the efforts of network participants who document marine turtle strandings in their respective areas and contribute those data to the centralized STSSN data base. Using the online reports, one can obtain basic summarized stranding information for the years 1980 to present. Queries can include Year, Month, Region, Zone, State, County, and Species. The data used to generate the reports have been verified, however they are subject to change if additional data are received.

To monitor marine turtle strandings along the Gulf and East Coasts of the U.S. and in portions of the U.S. Caribbean.

Voluntary participation marine turtle stranding monitoring program covering 18 coastal states from Texas through Maine and portions of the U.S Caribbean (Puerto Rico and USVI)

Data are collected by individual states and are propietary at the state level. Any publication or use of this data requires permission of the state(s) involved and must credit the Sea Turtle Stranding and Salvage Network (STSSN).

Available To everyone

Locations (lat/long) are mapped to verify they are in state, zone and county as entered and to verify they are along the coastline or nearshore questionable records are investigated and verified / corrected using online mapping program. SAS program developed to check for outliers in other data fields all records with outliers are investigated and corrected.

This data is currently wavered under the current NOAA guidelines for relational databases.

The archival process is currently under development.

The data resides on a secure database server only accessible through the NMFS network requiring separate multi-factor authentication for both network and database access.
