Summary
The Southeast Fisheries Science Center Mississippi Laboratories has conducted specific data collection and research activities focused on specific scientific issues. From 1988 to 1991, oceanographic and fisheries data were collected through a multiagency research project to develop a remote sensing system to provide near real time image products to fishermen in the Northern Gulf of Mexico. The environmental and fisheries data were used to develop experimental data products that were distributed to fishermen in near real time. The Mississippi Laboratories has supported efforts of the Hypoxia Watch Project since 2001 to monitor and evaluate dissolved oxygen levels in the western and north-central Gulf of Mexico. Data are collected during the summer groundfish trawl survey and provided to researchers to general near real time information. The Mississippi Laboratories has also worked collaboratively to support the NCDDC digital atlas by providing GIS maps of abundance and distribution of selected species sampled during annual fisheries independent resource surveys.

The Mississippi Laboratories has also worked collaboratively to support the NCDDC digital atlas by providing GIS maps of abundance and distribution of selected species sampled during annual fisheries independent resource surveys. |
Purpose: |
To provide support for special scientific and research projects, such as monitoring of dissolved oxygen levels in the northern Gulf of Mexico, real time information to support fishing operations, and GIS mapping of selected species sampled during annual resource surveys. |

Description: |
The study area encompasses Gulf of Mexico coastal counties of the USA, as defined by the Federal Coastal Zone Management Act, and Mexican municipal districts bordering on Gulf of Mexico waters. The seaward boundaries of the study area extend to the Yucatan Channel and the Straits of Florida Data have been broken down into 6 categories: physical, biotic, living marine resources, socioeconomic conditions, environmental quality, and jurisdictions. |
Data Quality
Quality Control Procedures Employed: |
Validation routines are applied during data entry to ensure the integrity of data collected. Data validation routines are also applied as data are migrated into the centralized data management system. |
