California Gillnet Size Samples

Between 1981 and 1990 CDFW port samplers collected length-frequency samples from fish landed by California gillnet vessels. Information collected from these samples included catch location(s), depth of catch, types of fishing gear employed, vessel identification number (boat number), date and location of landing, sample weights and landing weights, condition of the fish at the time of landing (dressed or whole), fish species, lengths (fork, total, or alternate), weights, sex, and reproductive information. SWFSC editors obtained California gill net market sample sheets and the corresponding ASCII data files from CDFW through a cooperative program and organized, edited and archived the length-frequency data.

The size information collected through this and other programs on HMS are used in assessments and analyses of the status of swordfish and shark stocks and are used in monitoring of other HMS stocks caught in the eastern pacific ocean.
