Abstract

This web service provides key ecological data layers in the New York Bight via the Internet and which can be loaded into client side GIS software. The web service includes spatial data for seabirds, deep sea corals, bathymetry and surficial sediments. These diverse data were requested by the New York Department of State to support offshore spatial planning. To the extent possible data is provided at the finest spatial scales survey data will support and use predictive spatial models to translate survey data into seamless data coverages.

Title: NOAA's Web Service for the New York Offshore Biogeographic Assessment
Short Name: New_York_Biogeo_Web_Service
Status: Completed
Publication Date: 2012-07
Abstract:

This web service provides key ecological data layers in the New York Bight via the Internet and which can be loaded into client side GIS software. The web service includes spatial data for seabirds, deep sea corals, bathymetry and surficial sediments. These diverse data were requested by the New York Department of State to support offshore spatial planning. To the extent possible data is provided at the finest spatial scales survey data will support and use predictive spatial models to translate survey data into seamless data coverages.

Purpose:

These data were developed and compiled to support offshore spatial planning in the New York Bight. The New York Department of State requested these data to fill in key data gaps needed for an ecosystem-based framework to coordinate and support decisions balancing competing demands in their offshore environment. Other states, federal agencies, academic institutions and non-government organizations will find this data useful as well.

Data Quality

Horizontal Positional Accuracy:

The accuracy of these datasets depend on the source and resolution of the data samples. See the following report for more information: Menza, C., B.P. Kinlan, D.S. Dorfman, M. Poti and C. Caldow (eds.). 2012. A Biogeographic Assessment of Seabirds, Deep Sea Corals and Ocean Habitats of the New York Bight: Science to Support Offshore Spatial Planning. NOAA Technical Memorandum NOS NCCOS 141. Silver Spring, MD. 224 pp.

Completeness Report:

The following reference provides information on omissions, selection criteria, generalization, definitions used, and other rules used to derive data sets which are part of this web service: Menza, C., B.P. Kinlan, D.S. Dorfman, M. Poti and C. Caldow (eds.). 2012. A Biogeographic Assessment of Seabirds, Deep Sea Corals and Ocean Habitats of the New York Bight: Science to Support Offshore Spatial Planning. NOAA Technical Memorandum NOS NCCOS 141. Silver Spring, MD. 224 pp.

Conceptual Consistency:

All users should independently analyze the dataset according to their own needs and standards to determine data usability.
