Abstract

Alexandrium blooms are one of several algal bloom types often called "red tides," but more correctly referred to as Harmful Algal Blooms (HABs). Alexandrium produces a potent toxin that accumulates in shellfish and can cause illness in humans who eat contaminated shellfish.

Distribution Information

No Distributions available.

Access Constraints:

Alexandrium distribution maps from onboard microscope counts, as well as physical oceanographic data, are made available immediately. Nutrient data and post-cruise cell counts are proprietary information, available only to project members for two years. Proprietary information is made public after the two year limit.

Use Constraints:

While efforts have been made to ensure that these data are accurate and reliable, neither NOAA nor WHOI cannot assume liability for any damages, or misrepresentations, caused by any inaccuracies in the data. Neither NOAA nor WHOI make no warranty, expressed or implied, nor does the fact of distribution constitute such a warranty.

Title: NOAA NCCOS: New England Red Tide Research
Short Name: red_tide
Status: Completed
Publication Date: 2009
Abstract:

Alexandrium blooms are one of several algal bloom types often called "red tides," but more correctly referred to as Harmful Algal Blooms (HABs). Alexandrium produces a potent toxin that accumulates in shellfish and can cause illness in humans who eat contaminated shellfish.

Purpose:

These data are for the research and development to create computer models to predict intensity and location of blooms based on biological-physical models using sea-floor mapping of "resting" cysts and typical weather scenarios (bloom transport depends on weather events that cannot be predicted months in advance). With advanced warnings of blooms, risks to public health and economic industries can be minimized, while state agencies will be able to staff for significant monitoring.
