Abstract

The Annual Economic Survey of Federal Gulf and Atlantic Shrimp Permit Holders collects data about operating expenses and costs of owning and maintaining shrimp vessels. Each spring, surveys are sent by mail to a random sample of 33 of all vessels with federal permits for the harvest of Gulf of Mexico penaeid shrimp or South Atlantic penaeid or rock shrimp. This information is used to assess trends in the financial and economic state of the fisheries, and to determine the economic and social effects of regulations and other factors affecting the Southeast shrimp fisheries. The individual information is confidential and only summary statistics are released to the public.

Data Quality

Representativeness:

Random selection of several hundred permit holders each year done to achieve representativeness of all permit holders.

Accuracy:

Several attempts were made to recontact the permit holder to confirm or correct unusual values reported on the survey forms. Values were presented as reported when confirmation was desired but not received.

Analytical Accuracy:

The analytical accuracy depends on the accuracy of the self reporting of costs. Follow up analysis guages the consistency of reported costs and revenues across the entire set of permit holders.

Quantitation Limits:

The survey requests a yearly summary of income and expenses rather than a transaction by transaction record.

Bias:

No known biases.

Quality Control Procedures Employed:

Standard Dillman method.
