Formerly Used Defense Sites are locations where military activity occurred and the various trajectory and ranges from these areas where weapons were deployed or tested. Therefore, this dataset acts as a possible proxy for unexploded ordnances or hazardous material. Unexploded ordnances are explosive weapons (bombs, bullets, shells, grenades, mines, etc.) that did not explode when they were employed and still pose a risk of detonation.

Abstract:

Formerly Used Defense Sites are locations where military activity occurred and the various trajectory and ranges from these areas where weapons were deployed or tested. Therefore, this dataset acts as a possible proxy for unexploded ordnances or hazardous material. Unexploded ordnances are explosive weapons (bombs, bullets, shells, grenades, mines, etc.) that did not explode when they were employed and still pose a risk of detonation.

Purpose:

To support ocean planning activities pursuant to the Executive Order Regarding the Ocean Policy to Advance the Economic, Security, and Environmental Interests of the United States, the Energy Policy Act, the National Environmental Policy Act, the Rivers and Harbors Act, and the Coastal Zone Management Act.

Process Step 1

Description:

Concatenate FUDS_number and Site_ID into new field in Inventories table and FUDS layer. Join the table to the layer on this variable.

Dissolve based on Name, Phase, Site ID, District, MRA number, MRS number, State, Program, Category and Division

Field calculate the Category field in the FUDS layer from the appropriate attributes in the joined table.

Merge source layers together and remove extraneous attributes from resulting attribute table.

Add "Program" attribute and populate with name of program for each layer (FUDS, MRA, MRS).

Eliminate features occurring on land by clipping (preserve intersecting area) to FederalAndStateWaters.

Convert Inventories into excel format and combine into single file. Convert excel document to table

Remove any FUDs features that overlapped with a MRA or MRS or both.

Populate the Division field in the FUDS layer via information collected from the map on the Inventories webpage.
