Abstract

This data set contains processed multibeam sonar data (Geotiff files) from 3 narrow (0.5-2.0 nm) cross-shelf transects from about 20 to 75 m depths near the border between Bay and Walton counties in NW Florida. The data set also contains morphometric data (reef maximum relief, area, maximum length, and distance to nearest reef on all individual reefs identified in the raw digital side scan sonar data from 1) 21 cross-shelf single-swath (150 m) transects between 20 and 50 m depths from off Panama City west to the Florida-Alabama border, and 2) 13 cross-shelf single-swath (150 m) transects between 10 and 50 m depths from just east of Cape San Blas east and south to about Cedar Key, FL.

Item Identification

Title: Panama City Habitat Mapping Survey
Short Name: Habitat Mapping Survey
Status: In Work
Abstract:

Purpose:

These data were collected to delineate and quantify hard bottom / reef habitats on the northern portion of the West Florida Shelf in the N.E. Gulf of Mexico shelf to 1) enable process-related investigations of essential fish habitat , 2) evaluate species-specific relationships between fish production and habitat type, 3) incorporate into the Panama City lab reef fish survey sampling universe, 4) develop survey and monitoring approaches that can be stratified by, or linked to, habitat, and 5) produce detailed habitat maps for uses such as marine spatial planning delineating essential fish habitat and predicting, assessing, and/or modeling impacts of such things as the Deep Water Horizon oil spill, dredging and beach renourishment, offshore pipeline and cable placement, oil and gas drilling, artificial reef and MPA placement, and red tide events.
