Full Citation Examples
Large vessel surveys were conducted during June-August and Oct-Nov, 2010 in the north central Gulf of Mexico to collect data on marine mammal spatial distribution and abundance in the region of the Deepwater horizon oil spill. . Visual survey data ere collected following standard protocols and are intended for analysis using the line-transect Distance method to provide estimates of abundance for marine mammal stocks within the survey area. Each survey includes a collection of data sets including visual survey data (survey effort and sightings of marine mammals and other species), passive and active acoustics data, sample collection information, and physical oceanographic data. These data have been used to support assessments of injury to marine mammals associated with the Deepwater Horizon oil spill.

Abstract: |
Large vessel surveys were conducted during June-August and Oct-Nov, 2010 in the north central Gulf of Mexico to collect data on marine mammal spatial distribution and abundance in the region of the Deepwater horizon oil spill. . Visual survey data ere collected following standard protocols and are intended for analysis using the line-transect Distance method to provide estimates of abundance for marine mammal stocks within the survey area. These data have been used to support assessments of injury to marine mammals associated with the Deepwater Horizon oil spill. |
Purpose: |
To assess the abundance and spatial distribution of cetaceans in the region impacted by the Deepwater Horizon oil spill |
Notes: |
Research cruises were conducted in the summer (Cruise number GU-10-03) and fall (GU-10-05) of 2010 as part of cooperative research programs conducted for the Natural Resources damage assessment (NRDA) associated with the deepwater horizon oil spill. Dat |

Data Quality
Quality Control Procedures Employed: |
Visual sightings are reviewed by lead observers and the field party chief at sea to verify species identifications and group size counts. Effort and sightings data from digital records are reviewed post-survey and compared to field notes and error logs. Corrected survey effort shapefiles are visually reviewed and verified. |
