Title: Bycatch Reduction Device Data
Status: Completed
Abstract:

The Southeast Fisheries Science Center Mississippi Laboratories conducts research and develops gear modifications to mitigate bycatch of protected species by fishing gears. Research studies are conducted to evaluate and/or develop Bycatch Reduction Devices (BRDs) to reduce unwanted bycatch of fish and crustaceans in commercial fishing operations. Prototype BRD designs are tested during paired comparisons where the catch of the test net is compared to a net with no mitigation devices (control net). Catch and length frequency data are obtained for fish and crustacean species.

Purpose:

To evaluate the effectiveness of Bycatch Reduction Devices for reducing bycatch commercial fishing operations.
