Total Vibrio parahaemolyticus, water
NUMBER |
Each cell of Vibrio parahaemolyticus (Vp) contains one copy of a gene called tl. Each water sample was analyzed for the number of copies of tl giving a direct measure of the density of Vp in the water column. Not all Vp are virulent. Units for values are Number of cells of Vp per 100 grams of water. |

The tdh gene is associated with virulence. Each cell of Vp can contain more than one copy of tdh. Therefore, the number of copies of tdh can exceed the number of copies of tl in some samples. Units for values are Number of cells of potentially pathogenic Vp per 100 grams of water. |

NUMBER |
At most sites, a large volume of water was filtered through a plankton net with a mesh size of 200 micron. This concentrates particate matter such as plankton to which Vp bacteria can attach. As before, the number of copeis of the tl gene serves to give a direct measure of the density of Vp associated with particles in the water column. Units for values are Number of cells of Vp per 100 grams of water retained in the net tow. |
