Abstract

As part of the AMAPPS program, the Southeast Fisheries Science Center conducted aerial surveys of continental shelf and slope waters from New Jersey to North Carolina between 23 November - 31 December, 2016. The survey was flown aboard a NOAA Twin Otter aircraft at an altitude of 600 feet (183 m) and a speed of 110 knots. The survey path followed tracklines oriented perpendicular to the shoreline and latitudinally spaced 20 km apart. "Fine-scale" track lines were surveyed in waters off the coast of New Jersey, Delaware and Virginia. The survey was designed for analysis using Distance sampling and a two-team (independent observer) approach to correct for visibility bias in resulting abundance estimates. Due to staffing issues, one team with four observers (left and right bubbles, belly and a data recorder) conducted the survey between 23-25 November. After 13 December the survey was conducted with two teams per usual protocol.

Use Constraints:

By accepting this document, the user agrees to the following when using OBIS-SEAMAP data in any publication, product, or commercial application:

For datasets under the CC-BY or CC-BY-NC sharing policy, permission is not required from the data provider(s) for use. Proper credit/citations for individual datasets and OBIS-SEAMAP are required (see below for more details),

For datasets under the "permission required" sharing policy, it is required that users contact and get permission from the original data provider(s) for the use of individual observation records from the datasets registered in the OBIS-SEAMAP database. Proper credit/citations for individual datasets and OBIS-SEAMAP are required (see below for more details),

Gridded summary data that OBIS-SEAMAP has generated are under CC-BY sharing policy and permission is not required from the original data provider(s) for use. Proper credit/citation for OBIS-SEAMAP is required (see below for more details),

The citation of any publication, report, or product that made use of the data or tools provided by OBIS-SEAMAP will be forwarded to the OBIS-SEAMAP Technical Team (seamap-contact@duke.edu) for inclusion in our list of references,

OBIS-SEAMAP and the original data providers are not liable for errors in the data. While we have made every effort to ensure the quality of the database, we cannot guarantee the accuracy of these datasets,

The burden for determining fitness for use of the downloaded data for any analyses lies entirely with users. OBIS-SEAMAP or the original data providers do not support outcomes of your analyses that used the data downloaded from OBIS-SEAMAP,

Be encouraged to consider inclusion of the accompanying transect (effort) dataset(s) if available into the methodology of your analyses, and

Not to redistribute the data you downloaded from OBIS-SEAMAP through any media without consent from OBIS-SEAMAP and the original data providers unless the datasets are explicitly shown under the CC0 sharing policy.

Title: AMAPPS Southeast Aerial Cruise Fall 2016 at OBIS-SEAMAP
Status: Completed
Creation Date: 2016
Abstract:

Purpose:

The goal of the survey was to conduct line-transect surveys using the Distance sampling approach to estimate the abundance and spatial distribution of cetaceans and turtles in waters over the continental shelf and slope (shoreline to 2,000 m isobath) of the eastern USA.

Supplemental Information:

The funds for this project came from the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) and the US Navy through the respective Interagency Agreements for the AMAPPS project. Flight time and other aircraft costs were funded by NOAA Aircraft Operations Center. Staff time was provided by the NOAA Fisheries Service, Southeast Fisheries Science Center and NOAA Aircraft Operations Center. We would also like to thank the airplane's crew and observers that were involved in collecting these data.

Data Quality

Quality Control Procedures Employed:

Visual sightings are reviewed by lead observers and the field party chief at sea to verify species identifications and group size counts. Effort and sightings data from digital records are reviewed post-survey and compared to field notes and error logs. Corrected survey effort shapefiles are visually reviewed and verified.

CC ID: 1225758
Description:

Trackline, visual sightings, and passive acoustic data are collected using at-sea data collection programs. Field notes are recorded by observers and written onto paper datasheets which are then key entered into digital databases.
