Short Name: | Biological Sample Data |
Status: | In Work |
Abstract: |
The Biological Sampling Database (BSD) is an Oracle relational database that is maintained at the NMFS Panama City Laboratory and NOAA NMFS Beaufort Laboratory. Data set includes port samples of reef fish species collected from commercial and recreational fishery landings in the U.S. South Atlantic (NC - FL Keys). The data set serves as an inventory of samples stored at the NMFS Beaufort Laboratory as well as final processed data. Information that may be inlcuded for each sample is trip level information, species, size meansurements, age, sex and reproductive data. |
Purpose: |
To investigate the biology and life history of economically important fisheries such as reef fish. |

Data Quality
Quality Control Procedures Employed: |
There are multiple sampling programs (federal, state, etc.) whose biological samples and corresponding data are received and housed in the Bio-Sample Database. The data corresponding to the biological samples are received through linkage to TIP and uploaded data through a template. The digital data are verified for receipt and accuracy with the biological samples. Any discrepancies between the digital data and any information written on the biological samples are noted, and the sampling program is notified, and a request is made for clarification. Data are edited only when the sampling program advises of the correction and then the verified and corrected data is received into BSD. |

Lineage
Process Steps
Process Step 1
Description: |
The BSD is linked directly to the SEFSC TIP database (Oracle). When samples are received from TIP port agents, the BSD retrieves the electronic data from TIP by interview ID. Other data sources than TIP can also be uploaded to the BSD by use of an Upload Template. The electronic data received from another source (e.g. Florida FWCC) are formatted to match TIP codes and then uploaded to BSD. All physical samples are verifiied against the electronic data before upload. |

FAQs
FAQ 1

---|---|
Author: | David Gloeckner |
Question: |
How are species logs proofed? |
Answer: |
Approximately February 1st of each year, we print a copy of each Species Log (titled: Species Proofing Log) showing samples that were received from the previous year. For example: 2008 RS Proofing Log would consist of all red snapper collections that were logged in for 2008 (i.e., PC collection #s 1 ? 450). The Species Proofing Logs consist of all data that is recorded on the Species Logs (i.e., PC collection #, date, source, source #, state, location, collector, # of gonads, # of otoliths, mode, gear, and collection comments). All Species Logs are placed in a binder so that PCLAB personnel can sign out one species at a time to be proofed. PCLAB personnel will initial the `sign out? sheet, annotate the `proofing start date?, and when proofing is completed for a particular species, they will annotate the `proofing end date? on the sign out sheet. PCLAB personnel will compare the data from the data sheet (taken to complete the Species Log) to the data entered in the computer (Species Proofing Log) and make any corrections that may be necessary. Approximately April 1st of each year, we will look at each Species Log showing samples that were received from the previous year to see if any collections have been received after the first Species Proofing Log sheet was printed. This ensures that all collections thus far received for the previous year will be proofed and will be accounted for when the Annual Report of Samples Received at PCLAB is completed (due date for this report is June 1st of each year). |
