Abstract

The web-posted Alaska Shore Station Database is a compilation of hundreds of intertidal sites that were visited and evaluated throughout the coastal waters of Alaska. At each station attempts are made to document all observed species and their assemblages, geomorphic features, measurements of beach length and slope, and gather photographic examples. This online database has been designed to integrate with the spatially explicit, Alaska ShoreZone web enabled GIS platform. The end result is a user friendly and accessible version of the Shore Station database with a queryable display of station locations, downloadable species lists and photos.

Purpose:

The Shore Station data has been collected to supplement the Alaska ShoreZone coastal habitat mapping program. This data set will help resource managers understand in finer detail habitat mapping information.

Data Quality

Completeness Report:

Species data include sessile epibiota. Access to the lower intertidal zone was limited by the tidal height at time of survey. Nearshore fish were not explicitly targeted in these low tide surveys and are only recorded incidentally at sites.

Conceptual Consistency:

Species Species data are observed macrobiota, with qualitative abundance score. Identifications mostly based on field observations. Some voucher specimens of algae collected for lab identification. Nomenclature reviewed by qualified reviewers and latest names are included in master species lists. QAQC included check for data entry errors, from review of original data entry forms and field photographs. Across-shore profiles corrected to water level at time at waterline, using tidal height prediction.

Quality Control Procedures Employed:

Contact the dataset POC for full QA/QC methodology
