Summary

Description

The Southeast Fisheries Science Center Mississippi Laboratories conducts fisheries independent resources surveys in the Gulf of Mexico, South Atlantic, and U.S. Caribbean Sea. Exploratory surveys were conducted in the 1960s and 1970s, while standardized surveys were implemented in the early 1980s. Surveys are conducted using a variety of sampling gears, such as bottom and pelagic trawls, bottom and pelagic longlines, plankton neuston and bongo nets, reef fish traps, and video camera array systems. Many of the Mississippi Laboratories surveys are conducted under the auspices of the Southeast Area Monitoring and Assessment Program (SEAMAP) which is a state-federal-university collaborative program for the collection and management of fisheries independent data.

Quality Control Procedures Employed:

As specimens are collected, total number of individual fish by species and lengths are taken and recorded into the shipboard data collections system.
