Abstract

The VERS system is composed of a database and other related applications which facilitate the reporting of electronically collected research data via Fisheries Logbook Data Recording Software (FLDRS). These data are collected aboard federally permitted commercial fishing vessels, and the system allows for the collection of data to exceed regulatory requirements to address research needs, while simultaneously being submitted for Vessel Trip Reporting (VTR) purposes in order to satisfy federal reporting requirements.

Purpose

The VERS system was developed to facilitate the collection of haul-by-haul effort and catch data on board commercial fishing vessels, while simultaneously meeting federal vessel trip reporting (VTR) requirements. VERS requires the collection of all core VTR data elements, but also includes the ability to collect additional data elements which exceed VTR requirements and which may differ among research projects.

Data are audited in several ways: a) automated database audit triggers and procedures, b) post load comparison to other data sets (eg. matching trip data to VMS, dealer, and/or Observer Program data).

Lineage Statement:

Vessel data is collected electronically using the Fisheries Logbook Data Recording Software (FLDRS). At the completion of a trip, an encrypted data file is emailed to the NEFSC servers and loaded to the relevant databases.
