Abstract: |
This accession contains data describing the camera trap deployments during SEFIS surveys. This information contains start location, start time, survey effort ID, data, duration, among many other parameters. Video data is not contained in this accession. These data are available in a CSV format file. |
Purpose: |
To (1) increase the spatial footprint and sample sizes of fishery-independent sampling in southeast US waters (2) add video cameras as a survey gear to address trap selectivity issues and to develop annual indices off abundance for species that avoid traps (3) map hardbottom habitats using multibeam sonar to improve survey design (4) use remotely operated underwater vehicles (ROVs) to visually assess broad- and fine-scale habitat and red snapper densities and sizes in continental shelf-break waters (5) perform research to inform survey methods and to address critical management issues, including an ongoing assessment of fisheries (split-beam) sonar as a fishery-independent survey tool, and longline surveys to assess patterns in red snapper distribution and abundance. |

Instruments
Instrument 1
Identifier: | SBE 25 Sealogger |
---|---|
Instrument / Gear: | Instrument |
Instrument Type: | CTD |
Description: |
SEALOGGER CTD model SBE 25 uses Sea-Bird's standard modular SBE 3 and SBE 4 sensors to measure electrical conductivity and temperature versus pressure. CTD data (and signals from othersensors, if installed) is recorded in battery-backed CMOS memory at 8, 4, 2, or 1 scan per second (user programmable) giving 1, 2, 4, or 8 hours of memory endurance (CTD only; less with additional sensors). |
Platforms
Platform 1
Identifier: | NOAA Ship Nancy Foster | ||
---|---|---|---|
Description: |
The Nancy Foster is a 187-ft research vessel that operates in all three SEFSC research areas. The Nancy Foster is used in habitat and fauna characterization in the nation’s National Marine Sanctuaries as well as pollution assessments, bathymetric surveys, physical and chemical oceanography studies, maritime heritage surveys, and pollution assessments. On board equipment includes two cranes, A-frame, J-frame and two winches. Special research equipment includes wet and dry laboratories, computers for data acquisition and analysis, and instruments for obtaining oceanographic and atmospheric data. The ship also carries four different launches, ranging from 17-ft rigid hull inflatable boats to a 23-ft aluminum boat for diving and oceanographic operations in shallow water. |

Identifier: | Pisces (PC) | ||
---|---|---|---|
Docucomp UUID: | 8ce0b2c0-19fa-11e1-bddb-0800200c9a66 | ||
Description: |
The Pisces supports NOAA's mission to protect, restore, and manage the use of living marine, coastal, and ocean resources through ecosystem-based management. Her primary objective is to study, monitor, and collect data on a wide range of sea life and ocean conditions, primarily in U.S. waters from the Gulf of Mexico, Caribbean, and South Atlantic to North Carolina. The region includes important commercial and recreational fisheries, and is one of the world's best known and most productive marine areas. The data collected by the ship is used by scientists who study variation in ocean conditions and sea life to better inform the nation's decision makers about such issues as sustainable fisheries, ecosystem structure and function, fish habitats and habitat restoration, coral reefs, and protected species status. Pisces also observes weather, sea state, and other environmental conditions, conducts habitat assessments, and survey marine mammal and marine bird populations. |

Platform 3
Identifier: | R/V Savannah | ||
---|---|---|---|
Description: |
The R/V Savannah is a multi-use 92' oceanographic and fisheries research vessel operated by the Skidaway Institute of Oceanography, homeported in Savannah, Georgia, and is a member of the University National Oceanographic Laboratory System (UNOLS) fleet. The R/V Savannah can sleep a total of 20 people and is used for biological, chemical, physical, and geological oceanographic studies in estuarine and continental shelf waters throughout the southeastern US Atlantic and Gulf Coasts. It can deploy trawls, longlines, handlines, dredges, traps, buoys, landers, and autonomous underwater vehicles, and is equipped with motion-compensated depth recorders, an acoustic doppler current profiler, CTD, crane, A-frame, pot hauler, flow-through systems, and a network of on-board ship sensors. |
