Abstract

The dealer management system (DMS) is a data warehouse that stores federal and state dealer permit and license information. The issuing agency, whether it is a state or federal agency, provides information on the seafood businesses, i.e., company name, mailing/physical address, telephone and license/permit number, to the Southeast Fisheries Science Center and these data are stored in the DMS. The system is developed to identify multiple records for the same dealer, i.e., dealers that have licenses or permits that are issued by different agencies. These separate dealer codes are linked such that the separate licenses/permits can be identified for the same dealer.

Although the DMS was developed in 2004, the data in the warehouse begin in 1999.

Abstract:

Purpose:

This system was developed to meet several purposes. First, it provides a verification table for all valid dealer codes, either state or federally issued, against which other databases are validated. Second, the DMS provides a cross-reference for all permit and/or license numbers issued to the same dealer or business. This cross-reference provides the link between data collected for and stored in multiple data collection programs. For example, through the DMS, data collected to monitor a specific fishery quota can easily be verified against the general canvass data in the Accumulative Landings System (ALS). Third, it allows users, especially economists and other analysts to identify the location of the initial transaction between the fishermen and the purchaser to geographic localities more precise than the county aggregations that are available in the ALS. This association provides the ability to associate fisheries data, whether it is landings data, size frequency data, catch per unit effort data, etc., with the dealer where the seafood product is landed. Lastly, the DMS also provides current contact information for participating dealers.
