IB 01-26: NMFS Prohibits Directed Fishing for Pollock in Statistical Area 630 Outside Shelikof Strait Conservation Area in the GOA

Notice of a fishery management action.

The National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) is prohibiting directed fishing for pollock in Statistical Area 630 outside the Shelikof Strait conservation area in the Gulf of Alaska (GOA), effective 12 noon, Alaska local time (A.l.t.), March 17, 2001, according to James W. Balsiger, Administrator, Alaska Region, NMFS.

This action is necessary to prevent exceeding the B season allowance of the pollock total allowable catch in this area. This action is issued pursuant to 50 CFR 679.20(d)(1)(iii).

The Shelikof Strait conservation area is defined as the area bound by straight lines and shoreline connecting the following coordinates in the following order:
58 degrees 51' N lat. 153 degrees 15' W long.;
58 degrees 51' N lat. 152 degrees 00' W long.; and, the intersection of 152 degrees 00' W long.
with Afognak Island; aligned counterclockwise around the shoreline of Afognak,
Kodiak, and Raspberry Islands to
57 degrees 00' N lat. 154 degrees 00' W long.;
56 degrees 30' N lat. 154 degrees 00' W long.;
56 degrees 30' N lat. 155 degrees 00' W long.;
56 degrees 00' N lat. 155 degrees 00' W long.;
56 degrees 00' N lat. 157 degrees 00' W long.; and, the intersection of 157 degrees 00' W
long. with the Alaska Peninsula.

After the effective date of this closure the maximum retainable bycatch amounts at 50 CFR 679.20(e) and (f) apply at any time during a trip.
