IB 06-64: NMFS Prohibits Retention of Squid in the Bering Sea and Aleutian Islands

July 14, 2006 - 2:30 p.m.

Notice of a fishery management action.

The National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) is prohibiting retention of squid in the Bering Sea and Aleutian Islands management area (BSAI), effective 12 noon, Alaska local time, July 17, 2006, according to Robert D. Mecum, Acting Administrator, Alaska Region, NMFS.

This action is necessary because the 2006 squid total allowable catch in the BSAI has been reached and is issued pursuant to 50 CFR 679.20(d)(2). This includes catch by any vessel participating in the Community Development Program fisheries.

NMFS is requiring that catches of squid in this area be treated in the same manner as prohibited species and discarded at sea with a minimum of injury.
