IB 99-13: Clarification of Requirements for CDQ Pollock Catch in the Aleutian Islands

January 29, 1999 - 11:30 a.m.

Notice of a fishery management action.

Compliance with closure of directed fishing for pollock in the Aleutian Islands subarea for vessels fishing under the Community Development Quota (CDQ) Program will be based on the definition of directed fishing for pollock CDQ, according to Steven Pennoyer, Administrator, Alaska Region.

The Aleutian Islands subarea is closed to directed fishing for pollock under an emergency rule effective January 20, 1999, through July 19, 1999 (64 FR 3437). This closure includes vessels fishing under the CDQ Program. A new definition of "directed fishing for pollock CDQ" was implemented under an emergency interim rule for the pollock CDQ fisheries (64 FR 3877, January 26, 1999).

A vessel would be directed fishing for pollock CDQ in violation of this closure if the round weight of pollock represents 40 percent or more of the round weight of all groundfish in the CDQ haul by a catcher/processor or the CDQ delivery by a catcher vessel.

To obtain additional information, consult the emergency interim rules referenced above or contact the Sustainable Fisheries Division, NMFS, 907-586-7228.
