Felipe Carvalho, PhD
Felipe Carvalho is the leader of the Stock Assessment Program (SAP) at the Pacific Island Fisheries Science Center (PIFSC). Felipe earned a Masters and a Ph.D. in Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences from the University of Florida and joined the National Marine Fisheries Service in 2014. At the PIFSC, Felipe worked as a stock assessment scientist until 2019, when he became the program lead. In the SAP, Felipe’s primary responsibility is to lead a team of scientists that provide fishery managers with a scientific basis for setting sustainable harvest policies in the Pacific Islands Region. His leadership philosophy follows the hallmark of the scientific process: curiosity and evidence-based decision-making.
Felipe also supports U.S. participation in international Regional Fishery Management Organizations (RFMOs), including the Western and Central Pacific Fisheries Commission (WCPFC) and the North Pacific Fisheries Commission (NPFC). Finally, Felipe continues to conduct applied research regarding stock-assessment methods.
