Infographic: Value of Chesapeake Bay Oyster Habitat

January 23, 2020

Oyster reefs are vital to a healthy Chesapeake Bay. Oysters help clean the water and provide important habitat for other species. NOAA and partners are committed to restoring oyster reefs in the Chesapeake Bay.

NOAA conducts important science to help make oyster reef restoration in the Chesapeake Bay‒the world’s largest oyster restoration project‒as effective and efficient as possible. We also provide funding to enable hatchery production of baby oysters and facilitate the partnerships that carry out this large-scale restoration. Oysters grown in aquaculture can provide habitat and help filter the water, too.
