Matthew Bowers, Ph.D.

Research Biologist

Matthew Bowers, Ph.D. is a research biologist and statistician in the Marine Mammal and Turtle Division at the Southeast Fisheries Science Center.

Matthew’s research focuses on using innovative technology and biotelemetry tools to gain insight into the underwater behavior and ecology of marine mammals for use in management, restoration, and conservation. This includes examining the effects of human stressors, such as offshore energy development, shipping, and incidental bycatch in commercial fisheries. Additionally, Matthew develops and applies statistical methods to estimate population size, analyze spatial distribution, and assess habitat use of marine mammals. Matthew obtained his bachelor’s degree in chemistry from Marquette University and received his master’s and Ph.D. in marine science from Duke University. Prior to joining NOAA, Matthew worked as a research scientist at Colorado State University and as a statistical consultant with Neptune and Company, Inc. in Denver, Colorado.
