NOAA’s Draft Mitigation Policy for Trust Resources

May 07, 2021

The public is invited to review and submit comments on the draft policy through July 30, 2021.

Update: The public comment period is extended through July 30, 2021.

NOAA’s Draft Mitigation Policy for Trust Resources (PDF, 170KB) is available for public review and comment. Comments can be submitted to MitigationPolicy.Comments@noaa.gov and are due by July 30, 2021.

The goal of the draft mitigation policy is improved conservation of NOAA’s trust resources through more effective mitigation of adverse impacts to those trust resources. In implementing the draft policy, NOAA will expand best practices in mitigation across NOAA programs and regions. The draft policy describes eight principles that will guide NOAA recommendations and decisions about mitigation, with the ultimate goal of achieving environmental benefits consistent with applicable authorities.

NOAA has authorities relevant to the conservation and management of a broad range of fish and wildlife resources. NOAA’s management and conservation activities may include mitigation, or the practice of avoiding, minimizing, or compensating for impacts to trust resources such as fish, wildlife, plants, and their habitats.

How to Comment

The comment period is open through July 30, 2021. You may view the draft policy here (PDF, 170KB) and submit comments electronically to MitigationPolicy.Comments@noaa.gov. NOAA will consider and address the comments received before issuing a final policy.
