2020 Eastern Bering Sea Ecosystem Status Report: In Brief

Considerable cooling began in late December 2019 and allowed for rapid build-up of sea ice, exceeding the median (1981-2010) ice extent in parts of February and March 2020. However, ice thickness was low and the ice retreated quickly with warm winds in...

Alaska Marine Ecosystem Status Reports - Interactive Overview

Ecosystem Status Reports are produced annually to compile and summarize information about the status of the Alaska marine ecosystems for the North Pacific Fishery Management Council, the scientific community and the public. As of 2016, there are separate reports for the Eastern Bering Sea, Aleutian Islands, the Gulf of Alaska, and Arctic (forthcoming) ecosystems. These reports include ecosystem report cards, ecosystem assessments, and ecosystem and ecosystem-based management indicators that together provide context for ecosystem-based fisheries management in Alaska.

2019 Gulf Of Alaska Ecosystem Status Report: In Brief

The Gulf of Alaska experienced unusually warm conditions in 2019. This followed the extreme marine heatwave of 2014–2016 (known popularly as “The Blob”) and a return to more typical temperatures during 2017 and 2018.

2019 Eastern Bering Sea Ecosystem Status Report: In Brief

The eastern Bering Sea experienced the second year of low sea ice conditions during winter 2018/2019 due to (1) residual heat in the Chukchi Sea in fall of 2018 and (2) anomalous winds from the south in February 2019 causing ice retreat.
