IB 06-29: NMFS Provides Guidance for Using Crab Longline and Pot Logbooks

March 08, 2006 - 2:00 p.m.

Notice of a fishery management action.

The National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) announces guidance in recording crab information in the Catcher Vessel Daily Fishing Logbook for Longline or Pot Gear (DFL) and in the Catcher/processor Daily Cumulative Production Logbook for Longline or Pot Gear (DCPL), according to Robert D. Mecum, Acting Administrator, Alaska Region, NMFS.

Recently, NMFS reformatted the groundfish DFL and DCPL to accommodate also recording the CR crab information. A column "CR crab" was added with space to record number of crab and also weight of crab. However, an additional column is needed to record the crab species code. NMFS recommends that crab fishermen mend this oversight by using the existing column "target species code". Mark out "target" and write in "crab". Recording of crab species code can then proceed with ease.
