IB 08-40: NMFS Opens Directed Fishing for Atka Mackerel

Notice of a fishery management action.

The National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) is opening directed fishing for Atka mackerel in the Eastern Aleutian District (Statistical Area 541) and the Bering Sea subarea of the Bering Sea and Aleutian Islands management area (BSAI) for vessels participating in the BSAI trawl limited access fishery, effective 12 noon, Alaska local time (A.l.t.), March 18, 2008, through 12 noon, A.l.t., March 20, 2008, according to James W. Balsiger, Administrator, Alaska Region, NMFS.

This action is necessary to fully use the 2008 A season total allowable catch of Atka mackerel in the Eastern Aleutian District and the Bering Sea subarea specified for vessels participating in the BSAI trawl limited access fishery and is issued pursuant to 50 CFR 679.25(a)(1)(i), (a)(2)(i)(C), and (a)(2)(iii)(D).

After the effective date of this closure, the maximum retainable amounts at 50 CFR 679.20(e) and (f) apply at any time during a trip.
