Reopening of the Commercial Golden Tilefish Longline Component in South Atlantic Federal Waters on July 24, 2024 for Eight Days

July 17, 2024

FB24-050: South Atlantic Fishery Bulletin: For more information, contact: Mary Vara, mary.vara@noaa.gov, (727) 824-5305

What/When:

The 2024 commercial harvest of golden tilefish longline component in federal waters of the South Atlantic will reopen at 12:01 a.m., (local time), on July 24, 2024, until 12:01 a.m., (local time), on August 1, 2024.

Why This Reopening Is Happening:

  • Updated commercial catch reports indicate that commercial landings have not met the 2024 revised commercial longline catch limit, and reopening will allow the longline component to reach its catch limit.
  • For the 2024 fishing year, the revised golden tilefish commercial longline catch limit is 324,912 pounds gutted weight. The commercial golden tilefish longline component closed on June 8, 2024, because the revised catch limit was projected to be met.
  • The final rule for Amendment 52 to the Fishery Management Plan for the Snapper-Grouper Fishery of the South Atlantic Region (Amendment 52), which revised the catch limits for golden tilefish and the fishing season for the commercial longline component, was effective on December 7, 2023.

During and After the Reopening:

  • During the reopening, the commercial trip limit for the golden tilefish longline component is 4,000 pounds gutted weight or 4,480 pounds whole weight. Only golden tilefish longline endorsement holders are allowed to harvest golden tilefish with longline fishing gear.
  • Amendment 52 revised the fishing season start date for the golden tilefish commercial longline component. The commercial longline component for the 2025 fishing year in South Atlantic federal waters will open at 12:01 a.m., (local time,) on January 15, 2025
