Casey Lohrenz

Safety Operational Lead

Casey earned her B.S. in Marine Biology from Northeastern University and participated in the Three Seas Program (an immersive and field-intensive program with an emphasis on scientific diving). She continued her education at Northeastern earning her M.S. in Environmental Science and Policy, while working as a Pathways Intern at EPA Region 1, starting her career in federal service. At the EPA, Casey was an environmental inspector for the Enforcement and Compliance Assurance Division, before moving to a position with the Long Island Sound Study, one of the inaugural EPA National Estuary Programs. Casey took on projects involving federal partnerships, awards and contracts, aquaculture, communications, environmental indicator tracking, habitat restoration, water quality, and sustainable communities. She also served as part of the Regional Science Council. Casey joined the NEFSC in April 2024, as the Safety Operations Specialist for the Northeast Fisheries Observer Program. Being new to NOAA, FMO and observing meant she had a lot of background information to catch up on, learning more about general observer programs and specifically about Safety requirements in her position. Casey helps to train all observers in marine offshore safety, responds to observers in distress and works closely with the fishing industry, NOAA’s Office of Law Enforcement and the U.S. Coast Guard to keep observers safe at sea.
