Background

Derek earned a B.S. in Natural Resource Conservation from the University of Florida (2016) and a Ph.D. in Marine Science from The University of Texas at Austin (2021). Prior to joining the NOAA Fisheries Office of Science and Technology in 2022, he was a Postdoctoral Scholar with Oregon State University and the NOAA Northwest Fisheries Science Center.   

Current work

Derek aims to optimize NOAA Fisheries’ fishery-independent survey (i.e., standardized field data acquisition) resources through strategic planning, facilitating coordination between programs, and supporting the implementation of next-generation estimation and sampling methods. He is also an Affiliated Scholar with the Virginia Institute of Marine Science, College of William and Mary, and is based in Newport News, VA.
