Betsy is a seagoing scientist with over 1400 sea-days on 17 research vessels. She specializes in development, testing, and deployment of oceanographic and plankton sampling gear, particularly: CTD (Conductivity,Temperature Depth) with rosette, Bongo nets, MOCNESS (Multiple Opening Closing Environmental Sensing System), and VPR (Video Plankton Recorder) sampling systems.  Betsy is also an experienced taxonomist of northwest Atlantic zooplankton, benthic invertebrates, and groundfish with special expertise in Ichthyoplankton and Polychaetes. In addition, she is a published scientific illustrator.
