Emma Beretta
Emma is a recent graduate from California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo, California with two summers of experience in fish acoustic data analysis at Scripps Institution of Oceanography in San Diego. Using different statistical methods and graphs, she studied which species of fish are detected chorusing in the California National Marine Sanctuaries and analyzed their diel and seasonal communication patterns. Emma has also conducted research on Northern Elephant Seals in Central California with Friends of the Elephant Seal, identifying beach characteristics that impacted the movement of pregnant seals and surveying whole populations at different beaches within the rookery. She hopes to use her B.S. in Statistics and minor in Biology to pursue a career in data analysis for improving marine conservation efforts, and is particularly interested in using acoustic data to do so.
As the Data Manager for the Passive Acoustic Ecology Program at the SEFSC, Emma has been organizing and modernizing acoustic data storage and archival processes for projects regarding North Atlantic Right Whales and Rice's Whales in the Gulf of Mexico and the Pacific Ocean.
