Informational Webinar and Listening Session on Updated Ecosystem-Based Fisheries Management Road Map
NOAA Fisheries is extending an invitation for Tribal engagement on updates to the Ecosystem-Based Fisheries Management Road Map on August 7.
About
NOAA Fisheries invites Tribal leadership and members to attend and participate in an informational webinar regarding an updated Ecosystem-Based Fisheries Management (EBFM) Road Map that will guide NOAA Fisheries as it continues to move toward managing fisheries at the ecosystem level. The purpose of the informational webinar is to provide an update on our progress to-date and to provide an opportunity for participants to share information and views on the revised EBFM Roadmap.
Ecosystem-based fisheries management is an integrated, science-based approach that includes consideration of the entire ecosystem, including people. It aims to maintain ecosystems in a healthy, productive, and resilient condition so they can provide the services humans want and need. Full text of the document and options for submitting comments is available here.
The proposed revisions aim to clarify links between EBFM and other initiatives, including climate-ready fisheries, improve connections between science and management, and better integrate habitat, protected resources, and social-economic sciences. Climate change is affecting our marine resources in many ways, including by altering species distributions and productivity. EBFM is the umbrella approach for addressing these challenges. EBFM is an on-going adaptive process that will be most successful under a collaborative process that aims to continually update and improve its science and management programs. NOAA Fisheries’ EBFM Road Map is essentially an options manual for NOAA Fisheries scientists and managers on providing information to support ecosystems and fisheries management, and on an approach to better understanding ecosystems and the role of humans within our marine ecosystems.
Questions we are looking for your input on:
- Is there ecosystem information or ecological data or analyses that Federally recognized Tribes need from NOAA Fisheries to support (ecosystem-based) fisheries management?
- One of our big-picture goals for updating this Road Map is to improve how we communicate and share ecosystem information. If you are familiar with our ecosystem status reports, are there improvements you would like to see in how we share those reports with Federally recognized Tribes?
Written comments can be provided through August 31st. You can direct your comments and questions via e-mail to nmfs.ebfm.roadmap@noaa.gov.
