Charlie Waters

Research Fishery Biologist

Charlie is a Research Fish Biologist with the Ecosystem Monitoring and Assessment Program at NOAA's Alaska Fisheries Science Center, Auke Bay Laboratories Division. There, he manages the research at NOAA's Little Port Walter Research Station on southern Baranof Island, including the ecology and evolution of salmonids and developing approaches to better assess the age, condition, and reproductive status of gadids. He also works to better understand the winter marine ecology of Pacific salmon through the International Year of the Salmon initiative, which is governed by the North Pacific Anadromous Fish Commission. Additionally, he is a member of the Pacific Salmon Commission's Chinook Technical Committee. He obtained B.S. degrees in Biology and Environmental Science from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and a Ph.D. from the University of Washington, where he used advanced genomic and statistical approaches to better characterize genetic and phenotypic risks associated with salmon hatchery rearing. His publications can be viewed on researchgate.
