Geret DePiper, Ph.D.
Background
Geret received a B.S. in Biology from Davidson College in 1999 and a Ph.D. in Agricultural & Resource Economics from the University of Maryland, College Park in 2012. Geret joined the Northeast Fisheries Science Center in 2012. He currently serves on the Habitat and Ecosystem Based Management Plan Development Teams for the New England Fishery Management Council, and the Ecosystem Approach to Fisheries Management Working Group for the Mid-Atlantic Fishery Management Council. Geret is also Co-Chair of the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea's Working Group on the Northwest Atlantic Regional Sea.
Research
Geret's primary research interests are coupled bioeconomic models to assist in the development of ecosystem based management, behavioral models to assess historical and likely future responses to changes in management, and statistical models of fishing location to better understand how and where people fish. Current and recent projects include the valuation of ecosystem services provided by oyster reefs, the assessment of conservation auction outcomes, risk-reward trade-offs in multispecies fishery management, and the development of logbook-based fishing location databases.
