Photo-identification of Cook Inlet Beluga Whales in the Waters of the Kenai Peninsula Borough Alaska

Final Report of Field Activities and Belugas Identified 2011-2013. Prepared for The Kenai Peninsula Borough

Data gathered about individual whales identified in the waters of the Kenai Peninsula Borough were compared to data gathered during our long-term (2005-2013) study of Cook Inlet beluga whales in Upper Cook Inlet. This final project report summarizes field effort and photo-id surveys in the Kenai Peninsula Borough from the 2011-2013 field seasons. It presents results from the analyses of photos of belugas encountered and identified in 2005-2013, including:

  • sighting rates
  • distribution and movement patterns\
  • reproductive histories
  • group composition
  • indications of injury or disease.
