Human-caused mortality and injury of NMFS-managed Alaska marine mammal stocks

November 22, 2024

These annual reports summarize records of human-caused mortalities and injuries and provide an assessment of injury severity of pinnipeds and cetaceans belonging to stocks that are included in the Alaska Marine Mammal Stock Assessment Reports (SARs). Each report considers a rolling 5-year window. Prior to 2023, annual reports were published as NOAA Technical Memorandums where records of human-caused mortality and injury of NMFS-managed Alaska marine mammal stocks were detailed in a table incorporated into the document. However, beginning in 2023 NMFS transitioned to publishing the report online as an AFSC Processed Report with an associated data file* (CSV) to increase efficiency in making the data available to users.

These data are needed by the NMFS in annual marine mammal Stock Assessment Reports, the Marine Mammal Protection Act List of Fisheries, and as a public record of human-caused mortality and serious injury of marine mammals, as required under the Marine Mammal Protection Act.
