Whistle Classification of Sympatric False Killer Whale Populations in Hawaiian Waters Yields Low Accuracy Rates

In the Hawaiian Archipelago, three genetically distinct false killer whale populations coexist. Researchers investigated whether their whistles could be used to identify populations in acoustic recordings when genetic or photographic-identification data are unavailable.

Variation in the Structure of the Deep-Sea Fish Assemblages on Necker Island, Northwestern Hawaiian Islands

We study the protected Necker Island to assess the abundance and diversity of the deep-sea fish fauna and their variability relative to environmental parameters with results supporting significant variability in deep-sea fish abundance and diversity.

Breeding and Calving Seasonality in the Endangered Cook Inlet Beluga Whale Population: Application of Captive Fetal Growth Curves to Fetuses and Newborns in the Wild

This paper presents results from the youngest portion of this population, deceased fetuses and calves-of-the-year, to provide insights into breeding and calving seasonality for this endangered population.

Achieving social and ecological goals of coastal management through integrated monitoring

A discussion of integrated monitoring as a coordinated long‐term process in which scientists from multiple disciplines collect and analyze biophysical and social data to meet shared objectives of tracking, assessing and understanding changes over time in social and ecological systems and their interactions.

Can Herbivore Management Increase the Persistence of Indo-Pacific Coral Reefs?

Coral reefs are unlikely to persist in their current form unless climate change can be addressed. Here we consider a potential solution and find herbivore management can have a role to play to reduce the threats that currently imperil coral reefs.

Can Herbivore Management Increase the Persistence of Indo-Pacific Coral Reefs?

With a focus on Indo-Pacific coral reefs, we review what is known about the underlying processes of herbivory and coral-algal competition that ultimately affect the ability of corals to grow, persist, and replenish themselves. We then critically assess evidence of effectiveness or otherwise of herbivore management within marine protected areas (MPAs) to better understand why many MPAs have not improved outcomes for corals, and more importantly to identify the circumstances in which that form of management would be most likely to be effective.

Single Nucleotide Polymorphism Markers for Genotyping Hawksbill Turtles

We combine capturing and sequencing techniques to genotype hawksbill turtles to examine population structure and aid in management and conservation.

Perspectives on Wildlife Health in National Parks

A Delphi exercise examined how evolving concepts of wildlife health resonated with Parks’ needs. The results clearly show support for moving toward a contemporary approach of wildlife health management.

Seamount Effects on the Diel Vertical Migration and Spatial Structure of Micronekton

This study examines the diel vertical migration behavior and vertical spatial structure of sound-scattering layers at two seamounts to better understand the ecology of seamount communities and the function of seamount habitats in oceanic ecosystems.
