Management Overview
NOAA Fisheries initiated a status review of this species in April 2022 in response to a petition requesting we list this species or any distinct population segments (DPSs) thereof under the Endangered Species Act. On April 15, 2026, we published a proposed rule to list two DPSs as threatened species (Southwest Atlantic and Southern Africa) and announced our determination that four other DPSs of tope shark do not warrant listing. The proposed rule and the draft status review are available for public comment through June 15, 2026.
