Protected Resources
One of seven research themes for the Economic and Social Science Research Program
Public Preferences And Economic Values
We study the public preferences and economic values for conservation of protected marine species–i.e., those listed under the Endangered Species Act or Marine Mammal Protection Act. This information can inform regulatory analyses and other decision-support processes undertaken by NMFS Alaska Regional Office (AKRO), the North Pacific Fishery Management Council (NPFMC), and other entities whose actions affect protected marine species in the U.S.
Published Studies
We have conducted studies of
- Steller sea lions (Lew et al. 2010, Sanchirico et al. 2013)
- Cook Inlet beluga whales (Lew 2019, 2023)
- Pacific salmon (Lewis et al. 2019, 2022)
- Other U.S. threatened and endangered marine species (Lew 2015, Lew and Wallmo 2011, 2017; Johnston et al. 2015; Pienaar et al. 2017; Wallmo and Lew 2011, 2012, 2015, 2016)
